A Step-by-Step Guide to Planning the Perfect Family Photoshoot

Step-by-Step Guide to Planning the Perfect Family Photoshoot

Capturing precious moments with your loved ones is a wonderful way to time capsule your memories. Planning the perfect family photoshoot ensures that you have an amazing session and create lasting images that you can cherish for a lifetime. To help you achieve this, follow this step-by-step guide:

1. Decide on the Type of session you want

Start by discussing with your family the kind of vibe you want for your photoshoot. Consider your family's personality and interests. Would you prefer a casual, outdoor setting, or a more formal studio environment? Once you decide on the theme it’s time to build your perfect session!

2. Choose the Right Photographer

Choosing a photographer’s style that aligns with your vision is so important. Do some research to find a professional photographer who specializes in family photography and has a style that resonates with you. Look for portfolios, read reviews, and consider recommendations from friends and family. A photographer with experience in capturing natural and candid moments will ensure the best outcome. Clients choose me as their photographer when they are looking for photos with life, that feel honest and relaxed. Clients say they love my bold, natural colors that feel timeless.

3. Determine the Date and Time

Consider everyone's schedules and select a date that works for the whole family. Keep in mind the availability of your chosen photographer as well. Schedule the photoshoot during the golden hour (an hour after sunrise or an hour before sunset) for the most flattering and soft lighting conditions. With my in-home sessions there is more flexibility in time of day we can schedule the session.

4. Pick location

Choose a location that aligns with the vibe. The location is not just a backdrop; it sets the stage, adds depth, and enhances the overall mood and story of the photographs. If you’re booking a session with me we’ll talk about the perfect location for you! You’ll also have my exclusive Location Guide!

5. Coordinate Outfits

Choose outfits that complement each other and align with the vibe. Opt for colors that work well together and avoid busy patterns or logos that could distract from the subject. It's a good idea to lay out the outfits beforehand to visualize how they will look together. If you’re booking a session with me I walk you through this! You’ll have my exclusive Style Guide and access to my client closet. I’ll send you collages with coordinated outfit examples to make this so easy!

6. Plan for Snacks and Breaks

Ensuring everyone is comfortable and content during the shoot is essential. Pack some snacks and water to keep energy levels up, especially if there are children involved. In my sessions I always get photos of just the parents, this is where the family story started! During these photos are also a great time for the kids to get a little break from being “on” and let’s them regroup.

7. Communicate with the Photographer

Before the actual photoshoot, have a conversation with your photographer to discuss any last questions you may have. All of my clients say communication is one of the things they have appreciated most about a session with me. I am going to guide you through everything from start to finish during planning. I am going to guide you through the session itself so you feel relaxed. My goal is for you to feel heard and supported through creating the session of your dreams!

8. Relax and Have Fun

On the day of the photoshoot, relax and enjoy the experience! Encourage everyone to have fun, be themselves, and allow the photographer to capture genuine moments. Remember, the most beautiful photos often come from the spontaneous and unplanned interactions between family members. And don’t stress about the kids, I never ask kids to stand still or do anything they don’t want to do, instead my sessions feel like snuggle time and playtime! In fact, at the end of most of my family session, kids are asking when we can hang out and play again.

9. Post-shoot Plans

Once the photoshoot is complete, discuss with your photographer the options for reviewing and selecting the final images. Consider creating a photo album, displaying the images in your home as canvas prints, or even something fun like a personalized calendar.

By following this step-by-step guide, you can plan and execute the perfect family photoshoot. These cherished images will serve as a lasting reminder of the love and connection you share as a family and document this season of your life. Get ready to create beautiful memories that can be cherished for generations to come.

I would love you to book a shoot with me so that you can experience how amazing a photo session can be when you're guided through everything from planning to poses, so everyone looks and feels natural and relaxed, and in the end you have photos that capture your love & joy perfectly and it feels like art!
