A Step-by-Step Guide to Planning the Perfect Engagement Session

Step-by-Step Guide to Planning the Perfect Engagement Photoshoot

As a Wisconsin engagement photographer, I've had the privilege of witnessing countless love stories unfold before my lens. Capturing this part of your love story is a wonderful way to time capsule your memories. An engagement session isn't just about capturing beautiful photos; it's about creating an unforgettable experience. With this step-by-step guide, I'm here to help you plan the perfect engagement session that reflects your unique love story

1. Decide on the Type of session you want

Start by discussing with your partner the kind of vibe you want for your photoshoot. Consider your personalities and interests. Would you prefer a casual, outdoor setting, or something more formal? Once you decide on the theme it’s time to build your perfect session!

2. Choose the Right Photographer

Choosing a photographer’s style that aligns with your vision is so important. Do some research to find a professional photographer who specializes in engagement photography and has a style that resonates with you. Look for portfolios, read reviews, and consider recommendations from friends and family. A photographer with experience in capturing natural and candid moments will ensure the best outcome. Clients choose me as their photographer when they are looking for photos with life, that feel honest and relaxed. Clients love that I offer unique and out of the box ideas for their session. Clients say they love my bold, natural colors that feel timeless.

3. Determine the Date and Time…and the season.

First think about the vibe you were looking for and the season. Did you want a romantic blanket of snow all around? The beautiful colors of a Wisconsin fall? How about the fun summer weather can offer? Consider everyone's schedules and select a date that works for everyone. Keep in mind the availability of your chosen photographer as well. Schedule the photoshoot during the golden hour (an hour after sunrise or an hour before sunset) for the most flattering and soft lighting conditions. With my in-home sessions there is more flexibility in time of day we can schedule the session.

4. Pick location

Choose a location that aligns with the vibe. The location is not just a backdrop; it sets the stage, adds depth, and enhances the overall mood and story of the photographs. Do you want the location you had your first date? Are you adventurous and want something that captures that? Do you want to get in the water? If you’re booking a session with me we’ll talk about the perfect location for you! You’ll also have my exclusive Location Guide!

5. Coordinate Outfits

Choose outfits that complement each other and align with the vibe. Opt for colors that work well together and avoid busy patterns or logos that could distract from the subject. It's a good idea to lay out the outfits beforehand to visualize how they will look together. Many of my engagement couples like to opt for the complimentary second outfit in their session and do a casual look and a beautiful dress. If you’re booking a session with me I walk you through this! You’ll have my exclusive Style Guide and access to my client closet. I’ll send you collages with coordinated outfit examples to make this so easy!

6. Personal Touches

I do not lean to heavy into props. I never want the prop to become the focus over your story and your love. But a small detail can be beautiful and fun. Consider bringing along any personal elements that reflect your relationship, such as a favorite book, favorite drink or champagne to toast, your pet, or even a cozy blanket. These props can add a heartfelt touch to your images.

7. Communicate with the Photographer

Before the actual photoshoot, have a conversation with your photographer to discuss any last questions you may have. All of my clients say communication is one of the things they have appreciated most about a session with me. I am going to guide you through everything from start to finish during planning. I am going to guide you through the session itself so you feel relaxed. My goal is for you to feel heard and supported through creating the session of your dreams!

8. Relax and Have Fun

On the day of the photoshoot, relax and enjoy the experience! I always encourage everyone to have fun, be themselves, and allow the me to capture genuine moments. Remember, the most beautiful photos often come from the spontaneous and unplanned interactions between you. The amount of times the partner has said “that was actually really fun.” says a lot about my sessions!

9. Post-shoot Plans

Once the photoshoot is complete, discuss with your photographer the options for reviewing and selecting the final images. Consider creating a photo album, displaying the images in your home as canvas prints, or even something fun like a personalized calendar.

By following this step-by-step guide, you can plan and execute the perfect engagement photoshoot. These cherished images will serve as a lasting reminder of the love and connection you share and document this part of your love story. Get ready to create beautiful memories that can be cherished for generations to come.

I would love you to book a shoot with me so that you can experience how amazing a photo session can be when you're guided through everything from planning to poses, so everyone looks and feels natural and relaxed, and in the end you have photos that capture your love & joy perfectly and it feels like art!
