Creating the Perfect Newborn Session: Tips and Tricks

As a Wausau, Wisconsin newborn photographer, I have a profound appreciation for the art of capturing those precious early moments of a baby's life. One key to ensuring beautiful and successful newborn sessions is having a well-prepared session.

I have three children of my own. I remember those first few days, weeks of having a newborn being a blur. Happy and exhausted, it’s so easy for those special details to slip away as our babies get older. That’s why I offer in-home newborn sessions. I want to document the beauty, the details, the experience of what these days really felt like. What better place to do that than where you are making these memories?! It also takes a big stressor off my families. There is no need to pack everyone up, or worry about running behind.

In this blog post, I'll share some valuable tips and tricks to help parents see how easy it is to create the perfect environment for newborn photography at home.

Choose a Cozy Space:

Select a room in your home with plenty of natural light. A nursery, bedroom, or living room with large windows is ideal. Soft, diffused natural light complements the baby's delicate features and creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere. These are places you are snuggling in the day to day, and brings in beautiful, honest details.

Temperature Control:

Newborns are sensitive to temperature changes. Maintain a comfortably warm environment, around 75-80°F (24-27°C), so your baby stays cozy during the session. I can even bring a space heater to maintain consistent warmth for their solo shots.

Props and Wraps:

While my style is very natural, capturing your little one as they are, I do prepare a variety of backdrops and wraps as well as my moses basket. Neutral colors work well for a timeless look. Soft blankets, wraps, and textured materials can add depth and interest to your photos. My client closet even includes timeless and classic newborn onesies and outfits.

White Noise Machine:

Using a white noise machine or app can create a calming environment for the baby. The gentle shushing sound mimics comforting womb noises and can help lull your baby into peaceful slumber.

Safe Posing Techniques:

Safety is paramount when posing newborns. I personally do not bend baby into unnatural poses because I want to document their details in the most honest way possible. But safety is still my number one priority in newborn session.

Flexibility and Patience:

Newborn sessions require flexibility and patience. Babies have their schedules, and they may need feeding, soothing, or changing during the session. I never put a hard time limit on my sessions. I don’t want you worried or distracted by time. I also want to be able to move at baby’s pace, taking breaks when they something or capturing the unexpected beautiful moments.

Creating the perfect in-home newborn setup is about embracing the a warm, inviting, and loving environment for your little one's first photos. We can capture these precious moments in the comfort of your own home with grace and beauty.

To ensure that every detail aligns with your dream session, I offer a complimentary consultation where we’ll get to know each other on a short phone call. You’ll be able to tell me what you’re hoping for in a session and I’ll be able to answer all your questions. When you book your session we'll discuss your vision, preferences, and location ideas to create the amazing photo session you’ve always dreamed of!
