How to Coordinate Outfits for Family Photos: Tips for Looking Your Best
Planning what everyone will wear for family photos can feel overwhelming; especially for moms who are usually the ones pulling it all together. Between picking the perfect color palette, finding clothes that flatter everyone, and making sure the kids are comfortable, it can quickly turn into one more stressful task on an already full plate.
That’s where I come in. As a Wausau, Wisconsin family photographer, I’ve helped countless families coordinate outfits that not only photograph beautifully but also feel effortless. My goal is to make the process easy, enjoyable, and stress-free so you can focus on what matters most: your family and the love you share.
When you look at your photos and share them with your friends and family the first thoughts should be is look how much love and joy they have, not noticing everyone is wearing shades of blue or black and red flannel. Your outfits should be the supporting character not the main focus.
Start with Mom - Because She Deserves to Shine
Let’s be honest, moms are usually the ones booking the session, planning the outfits, and making sure everyone looks their best. That’s why when I help coordinate looks, I always start with her.
We choose something that makes her feel beautiful, confident, and comfortable; then I build the rest of the family’s wardrobe around her. When mom feels amazing, everyone else naturally follows her lead. It’s her moment to shine, and she deserves to feel just as special as she makes everyone else feel every day.
Choose a Coordinated Color Palette (Not Matching Outfits)
Gone are the days of everyone wearing the same shirt and jeans. The key to modern family photos that look timeless and natural is coordinating, not matching.
Here’s what works beautifully:
Use with neutrals like cream, taupe, soft gray as a way to tie colors together.
Add texture with knits, linen, or flowy fabrics that photograph well.
Layer in soft, complementary tones we can colors that are in the same color family, palettes that work together naturally
Avoid loud logos or bright, saturated colors, which can distract from your faces and connection, and sometimes create color casts to the skin.

Use My Client Closet to Make It Effortless
One of the ways I make family sessions easier is by offering access to my client closet, which includes hand-selected dresses and pieces that photograph beautifully. These outfits are curated with color, movement, and comfort in mind; so you can skip the shopping and step right into something that makes you feel gorgeous.
From flowing dresses to perfectly neutral children’s pieces, everything is chosen to coordinate seamlessly, saving you time, stress, and guesswork. Many clients tell me this is one of their favorite parts of the experience. It allows them to relax, show up, and actually enjoy their session.
Plan for Comfort and Personality
Family photos are about connection, laughter, and love - not stiff poses or uncomfortable clothes. Make sure everyone’s outfits fit well and feel good to move in. Barefoot on the beach? Great. Cozy sweaters in the fall? Perfect. The goal is to look coordinated but still like you.
Don’t be afraid to let a bit of personality show through. These photos are about your family and your story. So if there’s a favorite pair of sparkly tights or beloved boots trust I can help them work beautifully and truly it only adds charm and authenticity.
