The Ultimate Checklist for Your Summer Photo Session

Summer sessions are some of my absolute favorites! The golden light, the lush greenery, the relaxed energy of the season. But with the beauty of summer also comes heat, bugs, humidity, and unpredictable weather. That’s why preparing ahead can make all the difference in how enjoyable (and successful) your session feels.

As your photographer, I do everything I can to make the experience fun, stress-free, and easy. I help you choose the perfect location, guide you through outfit decisions, and send over prep details so you never feel like you’re figuring things out on your own. When it comes to the day of your session, having a few essentials on hand can keep you cool, comfortable, and confident.

Here’s your go-to summer photo session checklist—with all the things I recommend bringing to help you look and feel your best:

Water (For Everyone!)

Staying hydrated keeps you feeling energized and looking fresh. A reusable water bottle for each person (especially kiddos!) is a must.

Bug Spray or Wipes

Mosquitos love golden hour as much as we do. A gentle bug repellent - especially for sessions in fields, woods, or near water - can save your skin (and sanity). I always have this on hand for my sessions just in case my clients forget!

Snacks (Low-Mess & Easy)

For family sessions, snacks are gold. Choose something non-messy like fruit snacks, crackers, or granola bars to keep everyone happy without sticky hands or stained outfits.

Wet Wipes

If you’re bringing snacks, even if they are low mess it’s always great to bring some wet wipes just in case! Another I always have this on hand for my sessions just in case!

Touch-Up Essentials

A few optional things I suggest:

  • Tissues or baby wipes

  • Hairbrush or comb

  • Lip balm or lipstick

  • Oil blotting papers (or a small towel for guys)

Comfortable Shoes (For Walking In Between Shots)

Bring cute shoes for the photos and something comfy to slip into between locations, especially if we’re walking on trails or across uneven ground. If we are getting in the water, water shoes or flip flops area great to have on hand.

Your Confidence & Trust

This might be the most important thing you bring. You don’t have to know how to pose or be “perfect” - that’s what I’m here for. I guide you through every step, help you feel natural in front of the camera, and make sure we capture photos that feel like you.

Bonus Tip: I’ve Got You Covered

Before every session, I send a detailed prep guide tailored to your session type. Whether it’s a family shoot, engagement session, maternity or newborn, a senior session, or something just for you, you’ll get all the tips, reminders, and info you need to feel prepared and excited. I’ll even help you with outfit planning, choosing the right time and location, and making sure everything runs smoothly so all you have to do is show up and enjoy.
