When Should I Schedule My Engagement Session?

Engagement photos are a wonderful way to capture the love and excitement of this special chapter in your life. They serve as a beautiful prelude to your wedding and will be cherished for years to come. You just got engaged and now the question arises: When is the best time to schedule your engagement photos? In this blog post, I'll provide a guide to help Wisconsin couples determine the perfect timing for their engagement session. The good news is you have lots of options! There are a few factors to take into consideration that will help you plan when to book your engagement session.

Early in Your Engagement:

Engagement photos are typically taken several months to a year before your wedding day. Scheduling early means we have time to plan the most amazing session! Scheduling your session early in your engagement also allows you to have plenty of time to select your favorite images for save-the-date cards, wedding invitations, and other pre-wedding materials.

Seasonal Considerations:

Wisconsin's seasons offer a stunning backdrop for your engagement photos. Consider the season you'd like as your backdrop, whether it's the lush greenery of spring and summer, the colorful foliage of autumn, or the winter wonderland of a snowy landscape.

Coordinate with Wedding Planning:

Work with your wedding planner or coordinator to select a date that complements your overall wedding timeline. This will ensure that your engagement photos are ready for any pre-wedding materials you wish to create.

Choose a Meaningful Location:

Select a location that holds personal significance for you as a couple. Whether it's where you had your first date, the spot where you got engaged, or a location that showcases your shared hobbies and interests, meaningful settings add depth and emotion to your photos.

Time of Day:

The time of day can greatly affect the lighting and mood of your photos. Many photographers recommend scheduling engagement sessions during the "golden hour," which occurs just after sunrise and before sunset when the light is soft and warm. Here in Wisconsin we have the longest days in summer and in winter our days are getting dark by 4:00pm.

Your Photographer:

Establishing a connection with your photographer is essential for capturing genuine and heartfelt moments. Take into consideration how far in advance they book, and their busy season when you’ll want to be the first to grab your date.

Your engagement photos can be a delightful journey through the seasons, offering diverse backdrops and settings. By considering the above factors and working closely with your photographer, you can select the ideal timeframe for your engagement session, ensuring that your photos beautifully represent this exciting chapter in your love story.

When we schedule your engagement session I send out a short client questionnaire. This is a wonderful way for me to get to know you and your partner and start to tailor the session to your love story! My sessions aren’t about stiff, overused poses, and forced smiles. I want to know you and your love story. I want your personality to shine through in photos. I want to create timeless photos that stand the test of time and in years transport you back to remember just what this season of your lives felt like!

To ensure that every detail aligns with your dream session, I offer a complimentary consultation where we’ll get to know each other on a short phone call. You’ll be able to tell me what you’re hoping for in a session and I’ll be able to answer all your questions. When you book your session we'll discuss your vision, preferences, and location ideas to create the amazing photo session you’ve always dreamed of!
