A Cozy Cabin Proposal & Snowy Engagement Session in Wausau, WI

Clients often ask me what my favorite sessions are to photograph. And honestly, it feels impossible to choose. Every type of session marks a beautiful moment in someone’s life story, and getting to capture those moments is something I never take for granted.

I get to photograph the excitement and connection of engagements, the intimacy and confidence of boudoir, the warmth and chaos of family moments, the excitement of seniors stepping into a new chapter, the glow of maternity, and the tiny, precious moments that come with newborns.

Each one holds its own kind of magic.

But there is something truly special about photographing a proposal.

The anticipation and excitement are almost palpable. There’s this quiet energy leading up to the moment, and then suddenly everything shifts into the surprise, the emotion, the joy. It’s such an incredible moment in a couple’s story, and I absolutely love getting to be a small part of it.

This surprise proposal in Wausau was exactly that.

When this client first reached out to me, he told me he was planning a weekend getaway with his girlfriend. They live in southern Wisconsin but had rented a cozy cabin and were coming up to the Wausau area for a ski weekend. While they were here, he wanted to surprise her with the proposal.

He had a vision: candles, flower petals, and “Will You Marry Me” glowing from paper luminary bags. The only catch? He was planning everything from hours away.

This is one of the things I love most about helping plan surprise proposals. My job isn’t just showing up with a camera. I help bring the moment to life.

We talked through the details, the timing, the setup, and how to make sure everything felt intentional and beautiful. Since he was traveling from southern Wisconsin, I took charge of making sure everything was ready to go at the cabin before they arrived.

The day of the proposal came together perfectly.

When they walked into the cabin, she had no idea what was about to happen. The candles were glowing, the petals were scattered, and the words “Will You Marry Me” softly lit the space.

It took her a moment to process what was happening… and then the emotion hit.

Those are the moments I live for as a photographer: the surprise, the joy, the disbelief, and the overwhelming love all happening at once. It’s literal goosebumps and tears watching it unfold!

And of course… she said yes.

After the proposal, we took advantage of the beautiful cabin space for some cozy engagement photos. One of the things I always do during sessions is create variety so couples get a gallery that truly tells the story of their day.

As part of the planning process, I had asked him for her dress size ahead of time and brought along a few beautiful dresses just in case she wanted to change for part of the session.

She chose a stunning green dress with cutouts that was absolutely perfect against the fresh snow.

In Central Wisconsin you never know what kind of winter day you’re going to get: overcast and moody or sunny and sparkling.

It was like the weather knew what today was and responded accordingly! It was the kind of winter day photographers dream about. Fresh snow covering the ground, golden sunlight filtering through the trees, and that quiet stillness that only comes after a snowfall.

There is something so special about photographing couples in this stage of their story. Everything is fresh. The smiles come easy. The laughter is constant. And the love between them feels electric.

Being trusted to help plan and photograph a proposal like this is something I never take for granted. I always remember it’s not just a photoshoot, it’s the beginning of a brand new chapter.
