Snowy Maternity Photos in Minocqua, Wisconsin (With a Cozy In-Home Twist)
One of the very best things about what I do as a photographer is being invited into all the many stages of my client’s lives. It is a privilege to be able to be trusted to capture someone’s special moment and even more so when I am invited back to capture the next chapter.
So when a previous wedding client reached out about a maternity session, I was genuinely so excited. There is something incredibly special about getting to witness a couple move from “I do” into parenthood. It’s an honor I don’t take lightly.
They are in the Minocqua, Wisconsin area, and had their hearts set on dreamy winter maternity photos, The vision: big snowflakes, quiet woods, that soft Northwoods magic. And I was all in. (Clients always ask - do you travel? Yes, absolutely I do!)
There was just one tiny problem.
A cold front was moving in. The kind of Wisconsin cold that makes your eyes water, nose turn red, and your hands go numb in minutes. Not ideal conditions for an outdoor maternity session. That uncomfortable cold shows in photos even when you’re smiling.
My client’s comfort and safety is always first. So instead of pushing through, I gave them options.
One of the options I suggested we pivot to an in-home maternity session and, weather permitting, we could step outside at the very end for a quick five-minute snow moment. This gave us the best of both worlds without having to reschedule.
They trusted me. And I’m so glad they did.
Why In-Home Maternity Sessions Are So Underrated
In-home sessions allow space for connection in a way that outdoor sessions sometimes can’t. You can move freely. You can take your time. You can cuddle on the couch, stand in the nursery, dance in the kitchen. It’s intimate in the best way.
And yes, their dog absolutely had to be included. Pets are family. And so often in maternity stories, dogs are the original baby.
They later told me they were so thankful we changed plans because they loved the in-home images even more than what they originally envisioned.
That’s why flexibility matters.
Planning Makes All the Difference
Before the session, I helped them plan wardrobe so everything felt cohesive and effortless on camera. Soft neutrals, texture, pieces that fit the relaxed, intimate vibe we were going for. We chose something comfortable and flattering for indoors, and then did a quick outfit change before heading outside into the snow.
That five minutes outside?
Totally worth it.
They got the snowy Minocqua magic they were dreaming about: rosy cheeks, fresh snow, that crisp winter glow. All without having to endure a full session in freezing temperatures.
What sets my sessions apart?
I travel all over Wisconsin (and beyond) for sessions, and one thing my clients know is this: I will never force something that doesn’t feel right. If the weather shifts, if a toddler melts down, if the dog steals the spotlight - we lean in. We make it work beautifully.
Because the goal isn’t stiff poses or perfectly curated backdrops.
It’s honest connection.
It’s storytelling.
It’s creating images that still feel like you ten years from now.
And getting to photograph them again, from wedding day to baby on the way, is exactly why I love what I do.
