Do I Need to Lose Weight Before a Boudoir Session?

Do I Need to Lose Weight Before a Boudoir Session?

Thoughts from a Duluth Minnesota boudoir photographer with a boudoir studio located in Wrenshall Minnesota.

This is one of the most common thoughts women have before booking a boudoir session.

“I want to do this… but I feel like I should lose weight first.”

If you’ve had that thought, you’re not alone.

But I want to answer this as honestly as I can.

No—you do not need to lose weight before a boudoir session.

Where That Feeling Comes From

Most of us have spent years being told—directly or indirectly—that we need to change something about our bodies before we’re allowed to feel confident.

Lose the weight.
Tone up.
Fix this.
Hide that.

So it makes sense that when you start thinking about a boudoir session, that same voice shows up.

“Maybe I’ll book later… when I feel better about myself.”

But here’s the hard truth about that mindset:

That “later” feeling doesn’t always come.

Confidence Isn’t on the Other Side of Weight Loss

It’s easy to believe that confidence will come once your body looks different.

But I’ve photographed women at all different sizes, in all different seasons of life.

And the women who feel confident in their photos?

It’s not because they reached a certain number.

It’s because they allowed themselves to be seen as they are.

What Actually Happens in a Boudoir Session

You don’t walk into your session expected to love everything about your body.

That’s not the starting point.

You walk in as you are—and we build from there.

I guide you through everything in a way that feels natural and comfortable. We focus on angles, light, movement, and connection—not perfection.

And slowly, something shifts.

You stop focusing on the parts you’ve been critical of.
You start noticing things you didn’t expect to like.
You begin to see your body differently.

Seeing Yourself Without the Criticism

One of the most powerful moments happens when you see your images.

Because the camera doesn’t see you the way your inner critic does.

It captures:

The softness
The strength
The way your body naturally exists

And for many women, that’s the moment they realize—

They didn’t need to change anything to be worthy of this.

You Deserve This Version of Yourself Too

Waiting until you lose weight means putting this experience—and how it could make you feel—on hold.

And the truth is, this version of you deserves to be seen too.

Not a future version.
Not a “better” version.

You.

Right now.

What My Clients Say

“I almost waited until I lost weight, but I’m so glad I didn’t. These photos made me see myself in a completely different way.”

“I loved how you were able to bring my self-confidence out. My body created a human, has fought a lot of battles and continues to fight. My confidence was at an all time low, but this experience brought about a new way of framing how I feel about myself. I struggled at first, I think most women do, but with empowered words and actions I felt more like myself than I had in a long while. See my images I thought wow that it was me! I was in awe.”

“My biggest fear was my self confidence. I feared that doing a photoshoot would just point out my flaws more than anything. Far from the truth! After the session I felt bold, fearless, comfortable in my own body. What changed for me in particular, was being able to see myself in a way that I wasn't picking myself apart. With Kelly's knowledge of body position and angles, I was able to appreciate my curves and unique body. YESSS!! I am beautiful, I am sexy, I am myself and that's all I need to be. I loved my comfort level during the photoshoot. The hype Kelly gave me the entire session!!!”

“Being a plus size woman, I was concerned with the parts of me I don't care for showing in my pictures. Kelly really understood how to pose me to show off my best attributes. My self image prior to my session was complicated. In many ways, I was more comfortable with myself than at any time prior in my life, but recent weight gain and difficulty losing weight had me feeling self conscious. During the session I felt pampered, appreciated and like I spent the day laughing with good friends. The session made me feel beautiful, sexy, and confident.”

Thinking About Booking Your Session?

If this is the one thing holding you back, I hope this gives you a little permission to let that go.

You don’t need to change anything about yourself to be worthy of this experience.

As a boudoir photographer in the Duluth Minnesota area, my goal is to create a space where you feel comfortable, supported, and seen, exactly as you are.

You don’t need to wait.
