Where Should We Take Our Engagement Photos?

One of the first questions couples ask me is, “Where should we take our engagement photos?”

And honestly, the best answer usually isn’t a specific location.

The best engagement photos happen in places that feel like you.

Your location doesn’t have to be dramatic, trendy, or somewhere everyone else goes. Think about choosing a place that fits your relationship; somewhere that feels natural, comfortable, and meaningful.

Maybe it’s the trail where you walk your dog every evening.
Maybe it’s your favorite small-town street, a quiet lake at sunset, a family cabin, your backyard, or even the place where you had your first date.

Sometimes the most meaningful locations aren’t the obvious ones.

Think About the Vibe, Not Just the Scenery

Instead of asking, “Where looks good?” try asking:

  • Where do we feel most like ourselves?

  • What kind of feeling do we want these photos to have?

  • Do we picture something cozy, playful, adventurous, quiet, nostalgic, or laid-back?

The location helps shape the mood of your photos, but it doesn’t have to do all the work.

A beautiful gallery usually comes from connection first, not from chasing the most popular spot.

Don’t Be Afraid to Think Outside the Box

Some of my favorite engagement sessions have happened in places couples might not have thought of right away.

A favorite coffee shop.
A gravel road near home.
Your backyard greenhouse.
Downtown streets at golden hour.
A place tied to a memory, a season, or simply part of your everyday life together.

Those kinds of locations often make your photos feel more personal, and years from now, that matters.

You Don’t Have to Figure It Out Alone

A lot of couples worry they won’t know where to go, but that’s something I help with every step of the way.

When we start planning your engagement session, I take time to get to know you both; your personalities, what feels natural to you, how you spend time together, and what kind of atmosphere you’re drawn to.

From there, I help narrow down ideas that actually fit you.

I have lots of locations I have scouted in and around the Wausau area. There are amazing locations in Wisconsin to travel to. I also send every couple my location guide, which gives you plenty of ideas and inspiration. It’s there to help you start thinking about what feels right, not to box you into a standard choice.

Sometimes couples already know exactly where they want to go.
Sometimes they have no idea.

Both are completely fine.

My job is to help you land on a place that feels natural, meaningful, and like the right fit for your story.

The Best Engagement Photos Feel Personal

At the end of the day, your engagement session doesn’t need the most impressive backdrop.

It just needs a place where you can settle in, connect, and be yourselves.

Because years from now, what you’ll love most isn’t just how the location looked.

It’s how it felt to be there together.
